Make your Computer Surf Faster

by Andrew on January 21, 2010

One of the settings that few people change but can make a huge difference, in how fast your computer feels when surfing the web, is your DNS (Directory Name Server).  This is your computers map to the internet and what www.google.com means and how to find it.  IfYou may want to check out this great utility that I just learned about that helps you identify the best settings for your computer.  Its FREE and worth checking out.

You can also use services like OpenDNS to provide a secure environment for your family or employees by blocking most know Phishing and other Malicious Websites and allowing the network owner to configure what web sites are visible.

Here is a DNS for Dummies if you want to learn more about what it is and how it works – http://www.woz.org/pages/staff/auri/dns/how_does_it_work.html

Here is an article that describes how to download and run – http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm making that change to the suggested server is not that difficult but should be done with someone comfortable making configuration changes.    You can find instructions on how to make the changes here at google’s public DNS support page.  http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html Note: you don’t have to use Googles, use the settings recommended when you ran the utility but this link provides good step by step instructions for most operating systems.
